Down Under Knockouts: A Review of Aussie Boxing in 2023

The year 2023 was significant for men’s boxing in Australia, with two new world champions and many fighters making a mark on the world rankings. Tim Tzuyu, an unbeaten super welterweight boxer, was expected to face American Jermell Charlo for the world title but Charlo opted for a different fight. Tszyu eventually won the title in a bout against Brian Mendoza, and is eyeing a potential fight with Charlo in 2024. Jai Opetaia, who won the IBF world cruiserweight title in 2022, successfully defended his title in 2023. He vacated his title after a lucrative fight in Saudi Arabia. Jason Moloney, a bantamweight, won his first world title in 2023 and will be defending his title soon. George Kambosos Jnr and Liam Wilson also made significant strides in their boxing careers, with potential world title fights on the horizon for them in 2024.
