Meet the Team: Selections, Steals, and Standouts

The 2023 AFL draft concluded with a new crop of stars set to join their respective teams for the 2024 season. While the rookie draft is still pending, the foundation for each team’s future success has been laid over the last two nights. From Harley Reid, who was selected as West Coast’s top pick, to Reece Torrent, who was chosen as the new Brisbane Lion at pick 64, the draft saw a range of talented players find new homes.

The Roar’s 2023 draft recap highlights each team’s selections and the standout players chosen from around the country. Adelaide secured Daniel Curtin with pick 8, a versatile player from Western Australia who is expected to bolster the team’s defense. The Crows also added Charlie Edwards and Oscar Ryan late in the first round.

Brisbane’s draft picks included Logan Morris, Luke Lloyd, Zane Zakostelsky, and Reece Torrent. The Lions appeared to favor alliteration with their selections and focused on adding potential high-ceiling players to their roster.

Carlton chose Ashton Moir and Billy Wilson, with Moir being a highly anticipated pick for the team. The Blues are confident that Moir, an enigmatic forward, has the potential to make a significant impact in their attack.

Collingwood selected Harry DeMattia and Tew Jiath, both of whom bring unique skills to the team. Essendon secured Nate Caddy, Luamon Lual, and Archie Roberts, with Roberts being considered one of the steals of the draft.

Fremantle was praised as one of the draft’s biggest winners, with key defender Ollie Murphy being highlighted as a particularly valuable selection. Geelong’s draft picks included Connor O’Sullivan, Mitch Edwards, Shaun Mannagh, George Stevens, Oliver Wiltshire, and Lawson Humphries.

Gold Coast focused on Academy prospects, landing Jed Walter, Ethan Read, Jake Rogers, and Will Graham. All four prospects are expected to make significant contributions to the team in the future.

GWS made several notable selections, including Phoenix Gothard, James Leake, Joseph Fonti, and Harvey Thomas. Gothard and Leake were secured with early picks and are expected to add depth to the team’s roster.
