NRL Legends: Honoring the Players We Lost in 2023

2023 was memorable for some, while others may want to forget it, but before it fades away, let’s take some time to honor the Australian rugby league players who passed in 2023. In June 2023, Billy Bischoff Jr, who played 151 games for the Balmain Tigers, passed away at the age of 85. He was a versatile player who excelled as a centre and played halfback in the 1964 grand final. Bobby Bugden, a speedy halfback who won six Premierships with St George, died in November 2023 at age 87. Kevin Considine, known for his speed and agility, passed away in June 2023 at 93. Troy Dargan, a young and promising NRL player who represented the Cook Islands, passed away in December 2023 at 26. John Hayes, a rugged forward with Western Suburbs, passed away in September 2023 aged 84. Matthew Johnston, a hard-working back rower and lifelong Eels member, passed away in July 2023 at 87. Mark Lyons, a rugged forward, and John Sattler, one of the greatest players for South Sydney, also passed away in May and March 2023, respectively. Jack Lumsden, a speedy winger, passed away in March 2023 at 93. John McDonald AM, a lethal back, captain, coach, and administrator, passed away in September 2023. Carl Webb, a fearsome player who represented Queensland in 12 Origins and played for the Kangaroos, passed away in December 2023 at 42. Additionally, Lionel Morgan, a player from New South Wales, who passed away in September 2023.
