Unsatisfied with the Result: Our Story

The case of Brayden Maynard at the tribunal prompted the AFL to propose changes to the rules regarding smothers. Maynard leapt off the ground to block a kick, ultimately concussing Angus Brayshaw in a sickening collision. This ruling prompted the league to review the smothers rule. The new proposition would require players to exercise greater care when attempting a smother. Additionally, there are plans to address run-down tackles and situations where players are penalized for increasing the force upon submission. Increased fees and penalties will also be implemented to deter unwarranted challenges. Lastly, there are miscellaneous regulation updates, such as specifying when substitutes are to be named and restricting coaches from making noises and whistling from the interchange bench.
